Below are the Frequently Asked Questions about "Port 25 Blocking" |
![]() |
|
Q. What exactly is changing? A. Cable One is blocking outbound port 25 for residential-level customers except for access to mail.cableone.net. Q. Why is this happening? A. Many Internet viruses spread through e-mail on unattended computers. This change will block any programs attempting to send mail from your PC. Q. I use a hosted domain from another company and I have their SMTP mail server set up in my e-mail program. Does this change disable me from using my e-mail address? Will all my e-mails now say myname@cableone.net? A. No and no. You can still use a hosted domain and keep your same e-mail address. The SMTP server change to mail.cableone.net is virtually invisible to others. Q. Will I notice this change? A. Possibly. If your e-mail program’s SMTP setting is not mail.cableone.net you may get an error when sending mail. Just change the SMTP setting to mail.cableone.net. This setting is typically found in your e-mail program’s account set-up or options area. Changing this setting will not change your e-mail address or delivery of your mail, even if you don’t use a cableone.net e-mail address. Q. I have a Hotmail account. Does this mean I have to use a cableone.net e-mail address now? A. No. The setting change described above just changes which e-mail server your program uses. Leave any POP3 settings in place. If you use a browser to get Hotmail, you won’t need to make any changes. Q. I use AOL (or MSN Explorer) on Cable One.net. Will this change affect me? A. No. AOL and MSN should not be affected by the change. Q. I’m a computer specialist and I run my own mail server from my home. Will I have issues? A. Probably. Since this change affects all residential-level accounts, you may need to upgrade to our small-office plan which permits this type of server access. Q. How do I go about changing my SMTP settings? A.
