America Online

For instructions on how to setup AOL to work though your CableONE.Net High Speed service click here.

Effective Monday 6/9/03

AOL (America Online) is going to block any mail server on the CableONE.Net network except those mail servers formally registered. This block will prevent AOL's servers from accepting mail connections from any non-registered CableOne IP address.

Symptom:
Error: 550 Relay Denied

Who Might Be Affected:
  • Business customers running their own mail servers, on the CableONE network, sending e-mail to AOL.
  • Spammers on Cable One's network

  • Who is not affected:
  • BYOA [bring your own access] AOL Customers
  • Customers using CableONE.Net e-mail servers.
  • Hosted domains where CableONE.Net is hosting e-mail.

  • Why is AOL Doing This?
AOL is receiving millions of Spam messages originating from broadband cable modem customers. Some spam is intentionally sent by our customers, but much more is the result of "relays" created to distribute and hide the origination point of spam. A relay can happen when an unsuspecting user sets up an mail server behind his cable modem and that mail server is hijacked to become a relay point for another spammer. By the time the user's account has been shut off for spamming, the Spammer has moved on to another account. Another major issue is compromised computers caused by trojans that are installed with freeware, shareware and peer to peer [file sharing] software.

If a legitimate mail server is blocked, you can request their approval for the IP by submitting a request through support, (click here to contact support). AOL will reject any requests directly from customers. Residential customers, since they should not be running servers, CableONE.Net will will deny these requests. The expected turnaround time from AOL is 24 - 48 hours.
