| How do I publish my web site using FTP? |
Once you have written your web page the next step is to publish or FTP your web page up to the world wide web. (The words "publish" and "FTP" are referring to the process of uploading your web page.) The Publish feature in some HTML Editors (such as Microsoft's FrontPage) is not supported and you will need to use a 3rd party FTP Program (File Transfer Protocol program) to upload your website.
FTP programs are available on the Internet for download from software download sites, such as Download.com and TUCOWS.com |
Below is an example using Ipswitch's WS FTP LE
(other FTP programs will be similar in nature) |
| Step 1: |
Open WS-FTP_LE. The connection / setup screen will open. Enter the following information and click OK:- Hostname/Address: Enter ftp.cableone.net
- Username: Enter your Cable ONE Username
- Password: Enter your Cable ONE Password
(View Screenshot) |
| Step 2: |
| The connection screen will close and the actual FTP screen will appear. The left side is your computer (Local System) and the right side is your Web Space (Remote System). (View Screenshot) |
| Step 3: |
| On the left screen, navigate and find your website. To FTP all you have to do is highlight your entire website and click on the arrow pointing right which is located between the two windows. Just remember to to upload everything needed for your pages (pictures, pages and folders). Click Exit to close WS-FTP_LE. |
| IMPORTANT INFORMATION: |
| The very first page needs to be named default.htm or index.htm. The first page the CableONE.Net computers look for when resolving a personal website is default.htm. If it cannot find that specific page it looks for index.htm. The name is case sensitive as Default.htm is seen as a different file than default.htm. |
