PowerBoost®: Frequently Asked Questions
What is PowerBoost®?
PowerBoost® is a cable modem technology that gives Ultra Plan Subscribers an ultra-fast burst of speed while opening web pages or downloading files. This burst exceeds the standard rate and may allow a doubling of speeds for a temporary period depending on available capacity.
How does PowerBoost® work?
When you open up a new web page or begin a new download, PowerBoost® will activate and open your modem up to use the maximum capacity in your neighborhood until you download 20 MB of data or upload 10 MB. After downloading 20 MB during this session, PowerBoost® deactivates and your modem returns to normal speed. If you start another download later, PowerBoost® will again reactivate. PowerBoost® is aware of the available capacity in your neighborhood and adjusts its capabilities constantly. During periods of heavy network congestion, PowerBoost® does not activate.
How long does PowerBoost® last?
PowerBoost® will normally last as long as it takes to download 20MB of a file, or upload 10MB of a file. There is no limit on the number of times PowerBoost® activates during a day, but if you are running multiple consecutive downloads, you may see only the initial boost. The technology is sometimes referred to as a “bucket” in which bytes can be “poured out” very quickly—the bucket requires a short refill period.
I have an older model modem. Will I be able to use PowerBoost®?
PowerBoost® will work on all Cable ONE supported and certified modems. Visit http://help.cableone.net/HSD/Modem/Certified.aspx for more details.
I also have phone service with Cable One. Will PowerBoost® function properly through my phone cable modem?
Yes. The PowerBoost® feature, with our Residential Ultra Plan, will operate as normal with the Cable One Phone Service.
How do I know if PowerBoost® is working properly?
You should notice an increase in speed when downloading or uploading small files, as well as performing normal Internet browsing. Results of performing a speed test on your connection will normally reflect an increase to your Extended speeds. During periods of heavy network congestion, PowerBoost® does not activate.
Can I buy the PowerBoost® feature separately?
Not at this time. This feature is only available with the Residential Ultra Plan.
I was told the Ultra plan is not available. When will it be offered in my neighborhood?
Cable One continuously evaluates our network and modernizes our equipment to bring higher levels of reliability, stability and security to our Subscribers. In order to properly support this new feature changes to our network must be performed. Upon completion of the changes the Residential Ultra Plan will be released.
How do I enable PowerBoost®?
If you are on the Residential Ultra Plan, PowerBoost® has already been enabled. To verify the modem is operating properly, please follow this link to learn how to “Reboot like a Pro”.
Some days my speed test results are much higher than others. Why does my speed vary so much?
The speeds received with PowerBoost® are relative to available capacity in your neighborhood. Because of this, you will see speed fluctuations in your service throughout the day.
Will the PowerBoost® feature work if I have been set to Standard Speeds?
No. If the threshold limits for your connection have been reached, and your Internet connection has been adjusted to Standard Speeds, the PowerBoost® feature will not activate. This feature will return after midnight, when your connection has been restored to Extended Speeds.
