Basics of Audio/Video Connections
*The digital receiver must always be directly connected to the outlet via coaxial cable.
Rule 1:
Inputs and outputs are extremely important. Every connection should have one side plugged into an “input” and the other side plugged into an “output”.
Rule 2:
When considering whether to plug into an input or output, consider the flow of the signal. In the case of a digital receiver and television, the digital receiver is sending the signal into the television. So the signal is going out of the digital receiver and into the television. Thus, the connection would be plugged into the output of the digital receiver and into the input of the television. See the example below:

In/Out Example
Rule 3:
Where you plug in the connections matter. Television inputs are marked according to what mode the Television needs to be on in order to view that signal.

For example, when using RCA Composite cables (Red, White and Yellow connections), you will typically need to be on Video 1 in order to view the picture. If you are using coaxial cable, you will need to be on channel mode to view the signal. See the table below to determine what mode your TV needs to be on depending on what connections you are using. Actual input names may vary by TV.

Rule 4:
Verify whether the connections you are using support audio, video or both. If you are using separate audio and video connections, it is important that they are plugged into the same “input” on the television. If you plug an audio connection in a separate input than the video, you will have no picture or no sound depending on the television mode selected.
Note:
After connecting your equipment, your TV should have a button labeled: mode, input, source or TV/video. This button will switch between all possible input sources. By striking this button multiple times, you should be able to scroll through all sources until you see the correct signal. This is also the button you would use to switch from cable mode to another mode (to view a DVD or play a game system).
